Domain names are not that important after all?
If you are my regular readers, you might know that I am a big fan of domain names. I have posted about important of having key domain names. business.com sold for $7.5 million. If domain name is not that important, who would have paid $7.5 million in the first place, isn’t it?
But after I’ve checked it out all the high paid domains, they are not really the home of any corporations or businesses at home. For example, business.com. If you checked that website, you may find it surprise that it just contains lists of sponsored links. Not sure they have made enough money to cover the cost of domain or not.
Hey from digg, I have found out Top 30 Most Wasted domain. Yes, they really are wasted. First I thought most people in the world won’t hesitate to kill someone to get 3 letters domain names. But after I have seen that lists, I feel that domain names are not that important after all.
Some of the domains in the list that made me surprise are
- Hot.com
A single page with nothing on it except a lame colored logo. The sky is the limit for a domain like this.
- Toy.com
PageRank: 0
Alexa: Over 3 million
An amazing 3 letter domain! Yet just another parked page.
- Pay.com
Parked
- Men.com
PageRank:3
Alexa: Over 250,000
Acquired for 1.3 million dollar and seems fully developed. However, a domain like this carries so much power that it is ridiculous it is not more popular.
- My.com
A 2 letter domain! Seems like an unsuccessful hosting company. This is the only 2 letter domain in this list, and man this is wasted.
It is quite obvious that most of those domain owners are waiting for their dream day, when a big company would throw a big cash at them to take over those names. I believe that day would hardly come as most of the internet users go to Google for whatever the thing they want. Not like 1990s, when no search engines are available, users have to type in the domain names to get what they want. I mean if you’re looking for toys, you’d better type toys in the Google than randomly going to toy.com, toy.net or whatsoever.
So when you are starting new businesses or blogs, don’t pay high price for domain names, you’d better save your efforts for the better contents and businesses.
Paint can create ico files
I’m a big fan of MS Paint for its simplicity. And Paint is available in all Windows after all. But I didn’t realize that Paint can create ico files too.
Whenever I tried to save a file in paint, I drop down file types available and I’ve never seen .ico, so I thought I can’t save it. But you know, if you give file name with .ico, Paint create icon files for you.
You can use those icon files for your folders or even for favico. It’s cool!!
That freak me out!
After I have read Cow’s freak email, that’s freak me out too. Do you really know that Abraham Lincoln, American president in 1846 and John F. Kennedy, another American president in 1946 have got a lot in common. Okay, here’s the email:
Abraham Lincoln was elected to Congress in 1846.
John F. Kennedy was elected to Congress in 1946.Abraham Lincoln was elected President in 1860.
John F. Kennedy was elected President in 1960.Both were particularly concerned with civil rights.
Both wives lost their children while living in the White House. Both Presidents were shot on a Friday.
Both Presidents were shot in the head. Now it gets really weird.
Lincoln ’s secretary was named Kennedy.
Kennedy’s Secretary was named Lincoln. Both were assassinated by Southerners.
Both were succeeded by Southerners named Johnson.Andrew Johnson, who succeeded Lincoln, was born in 1808.
Lyndon Johnson, who succeeded Kennedy, was born in 1908.John Wilkes Booth, who assassinated Lincoln, was born in 1839.
Lee Harvey Oswald, who assassinated Kennedy, was born in 1939.Both assassins were known by their three names.
Both names are composed of fifteen letters. Now hang on to your seat.
Lincoln was shot at the theater named ‘Ford.’
Kennedy was shot in a car called ‘ Lincoln’ made by ‘Ford.’Lincoln was shot in a theater and his assassin ran and hid in a warehouse.
Kennedy was shot from a warehouse and his assassin ran and hid in a theater.Booth and Oswald were assassinated before their trials.
And here’s the kicker…
A week before Lincoln was shot, he was in Monroe, Maryland
A week before Kennedy was shot, he was in Marilyn Monroe.
That’s really WOW!!! Isn’t it? Some people claim they have already learned about this in high school and some said this is very old news. But for me this is really WOW again and again.
Someone worked very hard to say this all coincidence are not really surprising.
Abraham Lincoln was elected President in 1860.
John F. Kennedy was elected President in 1960.
It’s hardly surprising that two men who (as noted above) both achieved their first political successes at the national level a hundred years apart would also ascend to the Presidency a hundred years apart. This “coincidence” is even less surprising when we consider that presidential elections are held only once every four years. Lincoln couldn’t possibly have been elected President in 1857 or 1858 or 1859 or 1861 or 1862 or 1863, because no presidential elections were held in those years. Likewise, Kennedy couldn’t possibly have been elected President in the non-election years of 1957, 1958, 1959, 1961, 1962, or 1963. So, even though both men were politically active at the national level during eight-year spans when they might have been elected President, circumstances dictated that the only years during those spans when they both could have been elected were exactly one hundred years apart.
You can read the long list of convictions of all the facts are not really surprising at snopes. But I don’t agree with those convictions. For me, all these facts are really surprising, amazing coincidences.
Hackatonish – Mac in a pc
I have been trying to run Mac on my PC. I have been reading about Mac good news here and there. Many people suggest that Mac is very superior to Windows, blah, blah, blah. So I thought I should give it a try.
But I don’t want to invest that much money for Mac hardware. That’s why now I’m into Hackatonish, which kernel has been patched to run Mac on non-Apple hardware. As of now, I have installed Jas MacOSX 10.4.8 in VMware. I have found out that Mac is quite suck though.
No, I’m not talking about performance, I know VMware is slow for every OS. But when I try to download Google Talk, with Mac version, I can’t talk, I can only type. What’s the point of having Google talk without having ability to talk? After that, I have downloaded attachment from my friend email and then when I tried to download Winrar, there’s no GUI support for Mac version. Geez!!
I pray it won’t end up like my linux experience.
Stay tuned for my updated Mac experience. I may install it on real pc soon.
Browser war not over yet?
Those who think browser war has already gone, think again! Remember, this June, Apple had to make their safari available for Windows. We all know Safari sucks on Windows. Yeah, that’s right! Apple has been forced to make because if they want to get more marketshare, Windows is the only platform that could do.
With Mozilla’s firefox community growing and some people got turn on by the speed of Opera, Microsoft have to make their IE7 available without WGA validation too. Of course IE7 is very superior than IE6 based on performance, functionality and security. But with WGA validation (you know most of Windows user are pirated), their reach is quite limited. So now, Microsoft don’t attach any bound anymore. Here we go, enjoy the war!

How to fix Google Sitemap error for blogger feed redirects to feedburner
After I have used feedburner for my feeds, I have setup feed redirect in the Settings –>> Site feed as follow.

After two or three days, when I login to my Google Webmaster account, I have got the following warnings in my sitemap error.

When I click to view the warnings in details, I saw this:
Line: 2 Invalid XML: too many tags – Too many tags describing this tag.
Line: 2 Incorrect namespace – Your Sitemap or Sitemap index file doesn’t properly declare the namespace.
It made me very frustrated. Feedburner isn’t compatible with Google’s Blogger services? After talking with my geek friends and emailing to Google, I have got the following solution.
- 1. I have to delete the old sitemap.
- 2. After that, I add new sitemap with ?redirect=false
That’s it! Since then, I can see my sitemap with errors or warnings free as below.

Don’t panic if you click your own Adsense
Well, I don’t use adsense here. So I don’t have to scare of one day getting email about I’m getting banned due to fraudulent click. But for one of my friend, who depends on Google adsense, it’s life and death situation.
One day, he accidentally click one of adsense and send email to customer support informing about the accident. (Yeah! he’s that honest) After two days of nightmare, he got the following reply from Google.
Thanks for letting us know about the clicks on your ads. We appreciate your honesty and your efforts to keep your account in good standing.
Although publishers are not permitted to click on their own ads for any reason, we do understand that accidental clicks may occur, so we don’t require that you contact us every time you click on your ads.
If you were clicking your ads out of interest or to see who was advertising on your site, we suggest the AdSense preview tool as an alternative. This tool will allow you to check the destination of ads on your page without the risk of generating invalid clicks.
Because we closely monitor all account activity using engineering systems and thorough human analysis, chances are we’ve already detected your clicks on your ads and discounted them. While these clicks still show in your reports, we filter out their associated earnings so that advertisers aren’t charged.
Whew!! He can relax now. So I just want you guys you know that if you accidentally click one of your adsense ads, don’t panic. It’s not the end of the world.
Reopen closed tabs in Firefox
Last month I share with you guys about the Firefox shortcuts that I frequently use. But right now, I found out this new, very nice shortcut again. I used to accidentally close tab in Firefox, sometimes in my favourite website or sometimes in totally first time new interesting site. To reopen, I have to dig down in my history list.
I don’t have to do that anymore. I can press Ctrl+Shift+T to reopen the tab I have just closed. More interestingly, you can press Ctrl+Shift+T as many times as you want to reopen many closed tabs. It’s quite handy for me indeed.
How to enable Run As command
For Windows Vista, this Run As command is available in all versions. If you’re not yet running Vista, you can still stick to XP. Yeah, this Run As is not enough to convince you to make a switch obviously.
To enable Run As in Windows XP or Windows 2000, you need to run related service.
For Windows XP,
- Go to Control Panel –>> Administrative Templates
- Double Click Services
- In the right panel, find Secondary Logon and double click.
- For startup type, choose Automatic and click Start.
- After that click OK.
Now secondary logon service is running. So that you can start using Run As command by right click on the program you want to run and choose Run As.
For Windows 2000, you do the same procedure, but look for the service named “RunAs”.
That’s it! Enjoy your favorite Windows!
